My Final Thoughts on Halo Infinite
A discussion on the current state of Halo Infinite and the franchise as a whole. With 343 Industries recently announcing that new projects were in the works, I think it is important to discuss the impact Halo Infinite has had on the series and what we can learn from it. We will go over the ups and downs of its life cycle and hopefully shed perspective on the influence it will have going forward.
Topics include Halo's 10 year plan, the various controversies that have occurred, the leadership changes, performance and population numbers, the state of xbox, the gameplay direction, multiplayer maps, sandbox changes, forge, and overall content. As well as whether or not the game was a success or if it failed.
This video will also act as a primer for a future set of video essays that I am preparing that will analyze Halo's design and lay out a vision for a potential future halo game. Mechanics, Weapons, Maps, Multiplayer, and Social Features will all be featured elements of the discussion as well as the story and narrative.

    "No, you guys. A lot of you just like everything". This is something that people need to recognize for themselves. Like, great! I am glad that they're easily satisfied and capable of enjoying objectively bad games, but 95% percent of the other people don't share their sentiment. They see what's directly in front of their face and solely recognize their own enjoyment while also being utterly incapable of understanding how anyone else may feel. Having low standards in conjunction with poor social awareness is a genuine sign of low IQ. I'm just glad that Microsoft and 343i are more aware of this than these so-called fans.

    Favyn, we need you! The rumors about remaking Halo: CE suggest that they'll include sprint & clamber, and Mint Blitz and Ben Plays Games have both endorsed the addition of sprint. They (343 & the sprint junkies) can't keep getting away with this! We need immediate backlash to change the Overton Window.

      It sounds like they're going to remake the original trilogy to train up their studio on Unreal Engine. I say: Fair enough. It's potentially less risky than trying to make Halo 7 as their first project in Unreal. It's also a chance to right the wrong of CE: Anniversary and make something better than the Gearbox port. If they do a good job, having a more stable, aesthetically true version of the OT could be nice. I can even get behind adding new Halo sandbox elements to CE- the energy sword, fuel rod cannon, hijacking, drivable wraiths, etc. I would enjoy it if they added some levels from Thel's perspective in CE. That's riskier, given their track record of awful storytelling that ignores canon and relies heavily on non-game material. And some things probably ought to be changed to match Bungie's original plans: If they continued on to Halo 3, I wouldn't say no to a remake of Cortana that actually looks like High Charity and includes the Flood Arbiters. Playing as the Arbiter for The Covenant would also be welcome, seeing as Bungie overcorrected by sidelining the Arbiter after backlash. Arby deserves to be the main character when you defeat Truth. There are some potentially exciting possibilities in this project, and I don't begrudge 343 the necessity of practicing with Unreal before continuing the main story of Halo. But it sounds like instead they're going to fundamentally change the gameplay so it's basically not CE at all. Now is the time to speak out against that! We have to head it off, or Halo is doomed to forever be Not!Halo.

    343 have tried to appease old Halo fans whilst trying to capture a new audience and it's been an impossible task. Halo fans can't accept that the sandbox playstyle is just not as appealing as a progression based playstyle for the newer generation. 343 meanwhile have chased industry trends for all 3 mainline Halo games to their detriment. They also aren't brave enough to try anything new and so Halo will continue in this downward spiral, trying to appeal to everyone whilst not being appealing to anyone.

    I do think the default minimal SBMM matchmaking (protective bracket for disabled & brand new players, in between lobby balancing) of pre 2019 CODs ironically enough might have actually accomplished the pro ideal SBMM argument. Tens of millions of copies of COD are/were sold, most players on a bellcurve are made up of average, slightly below average, and slightly above average range. Most lobbies were going to be made up of these players. Meaning most games most players were having a fine experience, while pub stompers were common they were not the norm. Add in design elements be it camper friendly maps, instant kill weapons, easy to obtain and overpowered killstreaks (care packages could give you some of the best killstreaks in the game), etc... and it allowed the masses to have an enjoyable experience. That's also why I think the pro SBMM argument is weird as COD for 10+ years showed a clear and successful example of a multiplayer game thriving, although I know the pro SBMM side would state "but if they had SBMM they would have even better engagement numbers and playercounts, etc..." and multiplayer competition is greater nowadays than it was during the 7th generation of consoles where players have tons of options. But yeah really the issue is implementation. as this video brings up, the wild swings, the pre determined set of highs and lows, the weird team balancing, longer queue times, worse ping, hurting experience with friends, the =feeling that you're just playing a slot machine, etc...

  • @cinemapigeon4898
    @cinemapigeon4898 16 днів тому

    Around the 3-6 minute mark was mention of playing against similar skilled opponents can be bad if mechanics (or game design) of the game are bad (option B)...and I think that's actually very much the case for COD. COD is not a perfectly balanced competitive game. For example, Rocket League would be a perfectly balanced competitive game (one that I love and almost exclusively play ranked EDIT see RL was literally mentioned :D ). COD by design has skill gap shrinking design elements (which is a great thing and has been why COD became what it is, also why I don't think average players need to be protected in matches when they can use an one man army noobtubes, commando lunge, no recoil instant kill guns, etc...)...but that said, when you got good enough in MW2019 for one example, your lobbies are all literally just M4/shotgun overkill with claymores. Everyone has to use the "meta" loadout/weapons or you simply lose.

    So should every gun be 100% accurate at all ranges, because random accuracy is unskillful

    • @FavynTube
      @FavynTube 23 дні тому

      You can alter projectile velocities to naturally decrease effectiveness at various ranges. For instance the heatwave is technically super deadly at long range but its projectile speed makes it difficult to use on far away targets making it more of a "close range" weapon. That could still technically be super useful outside of that range on the right hands

    • @codylego
      @codylego 23 дні тому

      @@FavynTube so yes every weapon should be 100% accurate? Would the assault rifle be better balanced if it had perfect accuracy but a slow projectile. To use the heatwave as comparison would you ever use it over the AR even if the ar travelled slower than the heatwave. A sentinel beam with travel time would still be far easier to use than the heatwave Yes you can balance weapons for different ranges without using weapon bloom but how can you have a problem with bloom but not base weapon accuracy stats

    • @FavynTube
      @FavynTube 23 дні тому

      Well first of all those are actually 2 different things. My grievance with bloom is when they are applied to precision weapons. Weapons that have the potential to naturally balance themselves with skill do not need rng. Some weapons may also have something referred to as "spread" which is different but also not ideal outside of certain weapons. For instance the H3 BR did not have bloom but it had spread and it severely hurt the consistency of the gun. Bloom is more so that the accuracy of a weapon can be controlled based on the user input of one's fire rate. Spread is more so an inherent randomness. For automatics I don't think either or is a particular issue but for skill based weapons I think both are bad and we'd be better off balancing ranged encounters via consistent projectiles and skill testing mechanics as opposed to rng...whether that rng can be mitigated or otherwise

    • @codylego
      @codylego 23 дні тому

      @@FavynTube but it creates the same problem. If the AR beats out a skill weapon 50% of the time due to random bullet spread isn’t that just as much of a problem as the DMR randomly killing faster due to bloom

    • @FavynTube
      @FavynTube 23 дні тому

      @codylego not necessarily because the fire rate (and magnetism) neutralizes a lot of the spread. But yes if the AR had vastly fluctuating kill times due to rng that would indeed be a problem. This is definitely made worse when hesdshot multiplier is turned on which means random shots hit the head and randomly do more damage which causes the exact situation you just referred to. Which would indeed be bad.

This game isn’t COD or Fortnite. Go back to the basics mirror the 3 halo games that literally shocked the world. Bring back 1-50 rank. 1exp a game. Unlockable armors by mastering achievements, have a champion that tells a true story. Armor customization, emblem customization, pre game lobby’s, veto system, red vs blue, I could go on and on. Archaea, bacteria, and eukarya. When it comes to things created by man, aka animals, you can often categorize them in the same ways we categorize all of life. Barnacles may appear to be related to mollusks, but they are actually related to crustaceans. Just because Halo may "appear" to be an arena shooter, doesn't actually make Halo an arena shooter. In the same way that barnacles are in no way mollusks whilst appearing to be.

    One problem with your argument. The BR being projectile does give casuals more time to escape gunfights, however with the amount of precision weapons Infinite has it would take lot more skill to master the BR. Weapons which take more skill, casuals always ignore (Skewer commando, sniper etc). This isnt Halo 3 where you can pickup a BR and outrange everything whilst sipping ice tea.

    • @FavynTube

      @danjjjatest Місяць тому

      @@FavynTube Right but your statement about making weapons more difficult to use doesnt work in a casual sandbox. No casual wants to use the difficult weapons. Increasing TTK also requires better aim/tracking which isn't casual friendly either. There is a counter argument to everything you've stated, so there isnt much of a conclusion to say Casual and Competitive are linked. It seems your perspective is biased towards Halo 3's design, however a lot of people would argue that the reliance on spawn camping the best weapons isnt skill. That's probably why 343 went with a precision meta so that every weapon can compete with eachother.

    • @FavynTube
      @FavynTube Місяць тому

      I think you're missing the point. My argument is literally that there is no "casual" or "competitive" sandbox. The entire focus of my video is to get you to stop thinking of game design in that way because it's flawed. And my example of projectile weapons was actually showing how increasing skill can be casual friendly because it decreases pressure. You say if precision weapons take skill casuals will just use the easier guns....again if you're designing your game so that holistically the sandbox functions in harmony then the "easy" weapons will fall within a precision weapons perfect and average ttk. And they will also not be like infinites weapons either because you will have to change the entire philosophy It feels like you're missing the point.

    • @danjjjatest
      @danjjjatest Місяць тому

      @@FavynTube When I say easier weapons, I mean weapons that are easier to land shots with like the AR/pistol. You dont notice many players pick up the projectile skewer despite being a 1HK. Its obvious to me that casuals play better with hitscan weapons than projectile. Atleast in Halo the TTK is slower so the hitscan isnt as obnoxious as CoD.

    • @FavynTube
      @FavynTube Місяць тому

      @danjjjatest yea the skewer as an infantry weapon is not optimal. It is more in the old spartan laser role of being super strong against vehicles but against players it's a lot less efficient than other guns. Keep in mind the increased gun skill would be paired with more predictable and "easier" to git targets. You Also have to be aware of the integrity of the gun. What is the mechanical ceiling of an Assault Rifle? How much can it do for your game? How long can it satisfy players despite not having a ton of depth or nuance. That's why you definitely need a lot of skill expression. That is what gives your game long term depth while ease of use helps with onboarding early on. You need to find the balance between these two. Thus the point in the vid about pushing each point to their polarities.

Turning Halo into a live service game with a cosmetic shop might be the most pathetic and cringiest thing I've ever witness happen in this industry. What a dumb idea. If I had a time machine and I was able to show 12 year old me what Halo 6 would look like, he would compare this current game to the live service games of his time...... Animal Jam, Adventure Quest Worlds, Poptropica. All of those dumb free to play browser games that made money by selling worthless pixels and memberships on a screen. The same business model that infected those games has now infected HALO. Halo is the Animal Jam of FPS games right now, The only thing that appeals to people in that game are the cosmetics. Fortunately this game will inevitably get shut down and all of those idiots who "invested" into this pile of crap will lose all of the stupid cosmetics they received the consequences 343i studios is enduring right now are absolutely deserved. The ai difficulty could get ramped up or ho down on the fly all seamless. Thats why sbmm has been in all the cods to collect data for ai. Ty for reading my theory

    Artstyle and military focused campaign needs to be the main focus in the next game.

    Halo 2 and 3 did both casual and competitive great. I have no idea how 343 can't identify this and realize it is possible! I swear 90% of the core Halo audience could be a better game director and give better ideas than anything 343 has done or will do.

      Let's talk about this actually. Halo 2 and Halo 3 primarily had "ranked" playlists as a focal point, of which, it separated these two categories by a numeric symbol rank. Ranked playlists were intentionally designed around low stakes competition. Training (Social) playlists were intentionally designed around no-stakes competition (Because they were intended for training and no stakes). There's only one intention behind not incorporating this setup inside of Halo, and that's "The Halo Community" as a lump-sum. As we know from Halo 5, a particular problem with the "Halo Community" is that many in the niche dislike ranked playlists, as it puts an importance on a symbolized low stakes competition, and thus a skill associated rank. The primary cause for stating something as obscure as "Halo 5 was competitive focused" was due to Social not launching with Halo Infinite, BTB not having Developer maps (it only had community maps), and Ranked having more of a role in matchmaking. But, that's not the whole story. That's a narrative. The whole story is when Halo 5 launched, it had traditional Social matchmaking slightly after launch, but it featured (as many overlook) a "new" BTB Social mode, coined "Warzone." In addition, Halo 5 launched with excessively overpowered automatics, compared to classic Halo, excessively overpowered accuracy (too much aim assist), compared to classic Halo, "Spartan abilities & Sprint", and a myriad of hated attributes that were opposing "MLG" mindset or 2007 (basically). In essence, a "Competitive focused" Halo would have as follows: - Numerous Ranked Playlists, with Variety in the Ranked options. The majority of these ranked playlists would be low stakes competition. 10 - 12 should work. - A handful of Higher-Stakes Competition Playlists (The "HCS" playlists, like the MLG ones in Halo 3), I'd argue 3 - 4 should be enough. - A singular "Social" playlist, in a Match Composure, allowing players to select what sort of unranked gametype they wanted, with no stakes competition as intentional. In this, the Ranked playlists, including the high-stakes, must follow a bell curve method of matching, of which a player is only matched around similar skill level based on their wins & losses. These Ranked playlists must be balanced around competition, but not entirely based around it. No radar is still a must, but it should specifically rotate between each meta cycle for each "Esports" league change. For example: - Each Ranked playlist needs to have variety, but only in the non-HCS playlists; One match could be "Slayer BR", another could be "Slayer Bandit Evo"; This cycle should also include rotated maps through every option - HCS Playlists need to be current day HCS settings, changing with each meta shift - Social needs to be the current "community" belief of whatever they think Social is And for a refresh, and change of pace, seasonal meta changes should accommodate larger changes among gameplay. Such that one "year" is without sprint, slide and clamber, another is without those but with an equipment, say thrust or grapple. Etc. For sandbox, the sandbox must be created around the designation of "ranked" playlists, not social playlists. Not every weapon is required to be precision-centric, but every weapon must fill a role, to which every weapon is catered around the in-the-moment use-case, not the "ease of access and ttk". Such that a plasma rifle drains shields, maybe stuns again, but has a longer ttk, and an assault rifle can melt only from a close distance, and does minimal (to no damage) at mid-range or longer. A BR has less aim assist close range, but zooming provides more assistance, etc. And those meta changes should shift to the sandbox, to which weapons that provide seemingly "faster ttk" would be cycled across with weapons without it, etc. Thus permitting intentional points of play, and permitting "control" back to the gameplay. Importance on power weapons and power ups should play a role, but unlike Halo 5, this centralized role must be around obtaining map control to obtain these, rather than "spawn and get it". That's how 343 would do it, if indeed they had the opportunity and weren't bound by Community. The fostering problem that no one will admit is that their stubbornness turns Halo into a nightmare of a game; An amalgamation of what "could be good ideas", if they weren't entirely opposing another community members ideas each time. That being said, the only way to "fix Halo" is to stop listening to a community devoted to making Halo entirely complacent into what their envisioned nostalgia is, and start making a Halo game, based on the original trilogy within multiplayer -- not based within the nostalgia of a community member with a UA-cam channel.

    Halo has become what Star Wars has been to me in the past years, wasting away in the pile of indifference and apathy with a few glimmers of light that make me want so bad for a brighter future. Each have had a few solid steps forward (forge and andor) and monumental leaps backwards (the shop and lack of interesting updates for the game and the god forsaken halo show, obiwan Ashoka and the butchering of the mandalorian). Both suffer from the same issue, being run by people unworthy of the mantle of responsibility that came with leading these franchises into the future and would much rather change it into what they believe is right. I’ll be playing helldivers 2 and enjoying Dune for the near future until they get it together (if they ever will)
